MARIE, MI - Two young cousins from the Upper Peninsula were arraigned on open murder charges this week, accused of severely beating and stealing prescription drugs from a Sault Ste. Marie man who died of his injuries hours later . Jeremy J. Lehre, 18, was arraigned Thursday in Chippewa County District Court on four felony counts: Open murder, tampering with evidence, malicious destruction of property exceeding $1,000 and larceny in a building involving the theft of prescription medications, the Sault Evening News reported . Aaron T. Lehre, 21, was also arraigned on open murder charges, as well as larceny in a building for stealing prescription medication and resisting and obstructing police, the news site reported. Authorities allege the two beat Wesley D. Cook, 48, early Wednesday. He died of his injuries later that morning. Police told 9&10 News the victim was found face-down, lying in blood. Cook had severe injuries to his head. The suspects, identified as the cousins, were located at the scene, police told the news site. Assistant Prosecutor Jillian Sadler called the crime "a very very very violent murder," the Sault News reported.

The City's Public Works and Engineering Services Department would like to inform residents that the last drop-off day of the year at the Household Hazardous Waste Depot (HHW) will be October 28, 2017. The facility will reopen in the Spring 2018. Residents are encouraged to bring acceptable household hazardous waste items to the HHW located at 402 Fifth Line East (City Landfill). Items such as paint, varnishes, pesticides, pool chemicals, drain cleaners, motor oil, antifreeze, propane cylinders, electronics and clean packaging Styrofoam are accepted. All services provided by the HHW are FREE of charge to Algoma District residents with no gate fee required. Throughout the winter, residents should store hazardous materials in original containers in a cool, dry place, safely away from food, children or pets. Never put hazardous waste in the garbage or down the drain. Do not mix hazardous materials, refer to warning labels and instructions on products and handle any potentially hazardous materials with care. The City of Sault Ste.
